Marquette Greenway

New Buffalo & Lake Michigan Shoreline

The Marquette Greenway is a developing regional trail that will eventually be a 60-mile continuous biking and walking route along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, connecting Calumet Park in South Chicago, Illinois to New Buffalo, Michigan. While the full trail is still under construction, several sections are already open and available for public use today.

In Michigan, there is a trailhead in downtown New Buffalo located at Smith and Mechanic Streets. The trail follows sidewalks along W Mechanic Street and N Willard Street to US12. The trail parallels US 12 to Grand Beach for 3 miles. This paved, multi-use trail offers a scenic route for walking, biking and running, with easy access to beaches, neighborhoods and local businesses along the shoreline.

The trail provides a relaxing way to explore New Buffalo’s lakefront community, whether you’re heading out for a short walk, a bike ride along the lakeshore or connecting to nearby parks and attractions. As additional segments are completed, this stretch will become part of a much longer regional route linking trail users to destinations such as Friendship Botanic Gardens in Michigan City, Indiana Dunes National Park and the Chicago lakefront.

The Marquette Greenway in Michigan is owned and maintained by the City of New Buffalo and New Buffalo Township.
