The Marquette Greenway will be a regional multi-use trail spanning 60 miles along the south shore of Lake Michigan from Calumet Park in South Chicago to downtown New Buffalo, Michigan. Four miles of this trail will be in Berrien County, Michigan.
Friends of Berrien County Trails is working with partners to complete the last 1-mile gap of the Marquette Greenway in Michigan from the state line to US12. This trail will follow Grand Beach Road and the Amtrak railroad where it will connect to the existing trail along US12. The trail follows the Amtrak railroad and US12 to a trailhead in downtown New Buffalo at Smith and Mechanic Streets. Ultimately, this multi-use trail will connect through Michigan City, Indiana Dunes National Park, Ogden Dunes, Gary, Whiting, East Chicago and from there to the Chicago lakeshore. Residents throughout the region have long been hoping for an uninterrupted trail connecting these three states and providing access to a wide variety of destinations along the lakefront.
The Marquette Greenway is part of the Lakeshore Route. The Lakeshore Route connects to the Red Arrow Trail, John and Dede Howard Trail, Lakeshore Trail, Van Buren State Park Trail and the Blue Star Trail through Berrien and Van Buren Counties. Our partner, West Michigan Trails, is coordinating trail connections north along Lake Michigan to Ludington. The ultimate goal is to have a continuous trail system along Lake Michigan from the Indiana/Michigan state line to Ludington and beyond.
The 1-mile project is in final engineering and design in cooperation with Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission. The project is expected to be built in 2027.
The first phase of the Marquette Greenway in Michigan to be completed was a 3-mile section including a trailhead located at Smith and Mechanic Streets. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2024 and a ribbon cutting was held in April 2025 for this first section of the trail in Michigan. There is almost 40 miles of trail completed of the 60-mile trail that will connect New Buffalo to East Chicago. Check out the latest route for the Marquette Greenway from Chicago to New Buffalo (subject to changes).
The Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission received a federal RAISE grant from the US Department of Transportation to fund several sections of the Marquette Greenway including the 1 mile in Berrien County, Michigan.
