The Red Arrow Trail will be a 17.5-mile trail connecting New Buffalo to Shoreham along the historic Red Arrow Highway route. We are working with partners to build a 4-mile section of the Red Arrow Trail from Bridgman to Stevensville.
The next phase of the Red Arrow Trail to be built will be a 4-mile section from Bridgman to Stevensville along the west side of Red Arrow Highway.

Since its debut in Union Pier, the Red Arrow Trail has steadily expanded, improving safety and adding vital non-motorized connections along Lake Michigan. Completed segments now link Union Pier, Harbert, and Sawyer, with new sections advancing north and south. The goal: a continuous trail from New Buffalo to Shoreham.
The Berrien County Road Department and its partners continue to make progress on the Red Arrow Trail. The first section was celebrated on May 28, 2021, with a ribbon cutting ceremony in Union Pier. The current project is to construct 4 miles of multi-use trail from Bridgman to Stevensville along Red Arrow Highway. The Berrien County Road Department designed the trail in coordination of the road reconstruction. By eliminating one lane of traffic there was room to build a multi-use trail in the county road right of way.
With the project, there will be designated trailhead parking areas at Haymarket Brewery and Peat’s Cider Social. The trailhead parking areas will have a sign and 3 bike racks at each location. In addition, a bike repair station is planned at Peat’s Cider Social.
The Red Arrow Trail is part of a high priority regionwide system identified in the MDOT SW Region Nonmotorized Plan and the Berrien County Trails Master Plan.
This new section of trail will be owned by Berrien County and maintenance will be the responsibility of Lake and Lincoln Townships.
The ultimate goal will be to close gaps from Sawyer Road to Bridgman, through Stevensville to Shoreham where the Red Arrow Trail will connect to the Lakeshore Trail. See efforts on the Lakeshore Trail.
The Red Arrow Trail is part of the Lakeshore Route. The Lakeshore Route will include the Marquette Greenway, the Lakeshore Trail, John and Dede Howard Family Trail, Van Buren State Park Trail, Blue Star Trail through Berrien and Van Buren Counties. Our partner, West Michigan Trails is coordinating trail connections north along Lake Michigan up to Ludington. The ultimate goal is to have a continuous trail system along Lake Michigan from the Indiana/Michigan state line to Ludington and beyond.
The Red Arrow Highway road work was completed in 2025 from Bridgman to the Cook Nuclear Plant. During road construction the path for the future trail on the west side of Red Arrow Highway was graded. In 2026, the Berrien County Road Department plans to reconstruct Red Arrow Highway from the Cook Nuclear Plant to Stevensville village limits. In 2026, the Red Arrow Trail will also be constructed from Bridgman (Haymarket Brewery) to Stevensville village limits (near Peat’s Cider Social).
The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission with support from the Friends of Berrien County Trails assisted Berrien County in obtaining a Michigan Transportation Alternative grant for $3,096,048 that will pay for construction of the trail.
This current project is funded, but funding is need to close the 4 miles of gaps from Sawyer Road through Bridgman, through Stevensville to I-94 and from Glenlord to Maiden Lane.
