The McCoy Creek Trail is a 4-mile scenic, multi-use trail that follows McCoy Creek (a cold-water trout stream) through downtown Buchanan, Michigan. This popular trail connects residents and visitors to nature while providing a safe place for walking, running, biking and outdoor recreation.
The trail connects several parks – to the west is a 31acre preserve, Bakertown Fen, and McCoy Creek Recreation Area. In the downtown, parks along the trail include Firehouse Park, The Common and Veterans Memorial Park. To the east of Buchanan, the trail winds through Spafford Woods and EB Clark Woods. Along the route, visitors will find exercise stations, historical mill sites, fishing access and wooded creek views, making the trail a favorite destination for families, fitness enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.
There are several trailheads to access the McCoy Creek Trail. There is a new trailhead along Walton Road near River St. Joe Brewery. Others include E.B. Clark Woods and the McCoy Creek Recreation Area. The trail can easily be accessed throughout downtown Buchanan.
The trail is owned and maintained by the City of Buchanan with guidance and assistance from the Friends of the McCoy Creek Trail committee.
In 2025, the McCoy Creek Trail was extended one mile east of Buchanan to River St. Joe Brewery, creating an even greater opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy the trail and connect with local destinations.
Community partners are continuing to work toward future trail expansions east along Walton Road to M-139. The long-term vision is to connect the McCoy Creek Trail with the regional Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail, creating a larger trail network linking Buchanan, Niles, South Bend and Mishawaka.
Partners have secured funding from HUD to advance design and engineering plans for the trail from River St Joe Brewery to a proposed trailhead at Winn Road. Funding for construction is still needed.
