Red Arrow Trail – Harbor Country, Michigan

The Red Arrow Trail is a growing 8-mile multi-use trail in Berrien County’s Harbor Country connecting New Buffalo to Sawyer. The trail follows the historic Red Arrow Highway corridor, offering a scenic route that connects local businesses, beaches, parks and neighborhoods. There is also a 1.5-mile section of this trail along Red Arrow Highway from I-94 (north of Stevensville) to Glenlord Road.

The Red Arrow Trail is part of the Lakeshore Route which will connect communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline while providing a safe route for walking, biking and outdoor recreation.

The Red Arrow Trail begins at US-12 and Red Arrow Highway just north of New Buffalo and extends to Sawyer Road in Chikaming Township. The trail links several Harbor Country parks and communities, including Sawyer, Harbert, Union Pier and New Buffalo, creating new opportunities for residents and visitors to explore the Harbor Country region without relying on a vehicle. The trail can easily be accessed at trailheads in Union Pier and at Chikaming Township’s Community Park. Both trailheads have bathrooms.

The Red Arrow Trail is owned and maintained by New Buffalo, Chikaming and Lincoln Townships.

Recent News

Berrien County Road Department with the assistance of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission secured MDOT Transportation Alternatives Program funding to complete a 4-mile section of the Red Arrow Trail from north of Bridgman at Haymarket Brewery to just south of Stevensville at Pete’s Cider.

Future Expansion Efforts

Work continues to expand the Red Arrow Trail network. Future plans include extending the trail into downtown New Buffalo and continuing north from Sawyer to connect with Warren Dunes State Park and through Bridgman. The remaining gaps are in Stevensville and Lincoln Township. These expansions will strengthen regional trail connections and improve access to some of Southwest Michigan’s most popular destinations.
